Marc Temple is a Talent Delivery Consultant at Electus Recruitment, here's his account of leaving the Armed Forces to start a new career... 1. What was your role within the Armed Forces and how long did you serve? My role was to set up and maintain communications to Air Defence detachments via a command post and I also gave orders over secure communications.&nbsp;I served for five years in the Royal Artillery. 2. What were your reasons for leaving? The main reason for leaving was to try something different and after five years service I felt it was time to look for a new challenge. 3. How did you feel about the prospect of life and work on civvy street? It was quite daunting at first but I felt that if I were determined enough to carve a new career, then it was totally possible to transition from the Armed Forces into everyday life. 4. How did you go about finding work after leaving the Armed Forces? How easy/difficult was this? At the time of leaving I remember updating my CV with all of my qualifications and transferable skills I gained within my position in the Armed Forces. My role was quite specific but there were general character building attributes and duties that I knew would be applicable to roles outside of the Armed Forces.&nbsp;I printed out many copies of my CV, registered with specialist recruitment agencies and visited various companies, handing my CV out to them directly. I also registered with the Job Centre. With determination it didn’t take long to find something suitable and that's the key thing, don't give up! 5. What skills were transferable? I left the Army with many skills, but mainly telecommunications which at the time allowed me to get into a role fitting TV, Phone and Broadband for NTL which is now Virgin Media. 6. Are there any similarities between your role now and your role in the Armed Forces? As a Talent Delivery Consultant at Electus Recruitment, I work in a sales environment with targets so I suppose that determination and the will to achieve, skills which I learnt within my time in the Army, stand me in good stead within the role. I have also gained a great deal of people skills and knowledge from different industries which allows me to communicate with candidates and clients more effectively. 7. Do you ever regret your decision? No, after five years I felt it was the right time to move on. 8. What advice would you give others thinking of leaving the Armed Forces? First and foremost update your CV then do your research, registering with relevant recruitment agencies within the industry you are looking to move into. It's also a good idea to create a Linked In profile or update one if you already have one because Recruiting Managers might headhunt online before making a vacancy available.

On the 25th&nbsp;February, 2015 the Government announced two new employer-led pilot projects which will open up new routes into engineering for women as well as increase their potential to advance in engineering careers.The two&nbsp;projects will be run by British-based global engineering consultancies WS Atkins and Hyder Consulting putting a £208,000 pot of joint Government and private&nbsp;money aside to use, setting up new skills programmes for new and former women engineers and improve the representation of women in their UK workforces.Skills Minister Nick Boles said:'With UK manufacturing on the up and major upgrades to our transport links and infrastructure underway, there’s been no better time to enter an engineering career. To keep the UK at the forefront of engineering innovation we need the skills of the whole population&nbsp;and that is why it is vital to capitalise on the contribution of women to the sector. I’m delighted to see WS Atkins and Hyder Consulting lead by example, and urge other employers to do the same.’The two&nbsp;companies were chosen from a competitive tender under the Government’s Employer Ownership of Skills Fund, which provides a fast and simple grant offer for businesses. The projects receiving funding are:<ul><li>WS Atkins will support the training of 100 women to level three&nbsp;qualifications to aid their return to engineering after a break in their careers</li><li>Hyder Consultancy is to support the training of 80 female engineers up to level four&nbsp;(degree equivalent) standards to help them advance their careers</li></ul>Professor Dr Uwe Krueger, Chief Executive Officer of Atkins said:‘Women, in particular, are hugely underrepresented in the design and engineering sector so initiatives which help inspire, attract and retain talented people or to assist them progress in their careers will make a real and tangible difference. We know that returning to work after maternity leave or moving to flexible working to accommodate a young family can be a struggle, and by investing in this programme we will make it easier for parents to manage their work/life balance and therefore continue their career development.’The 'Women in Engineering' fund is a part of the Government’s response to the Perkins Review of Engineering Skills published in November 2013, which noted the positive impact an increasing base of engineers would have on the UK economy. Little wonder, as the shortage of engineers currently stands at over 55,000 people and will only increase as new technologies move into production. Some predict the deficit could double in the next 5 years and represents a brewing crisis for UK manufacturing.Whilst the schemes are commendable, they need to represent the spear tip of a wider strategy.&nbsp;The shortage of engineers in this country is a real problem, effecting military aviation, defence contractors and aerospace firms to name but three sectors. There must be more done at an&nbsp;educational level to make engineering, or any profession for that matter, a viable career for both genders. It's been established beyond reasonable doubt that the toys children play with have a huge influence over their career choices.&nbsp;Moreover educational toys are overwhelmingly targeted at boys, and those targeted at&nbsp;girls being focussed on braiding and beads over science and history.​

NEW ROUTES INTO ENGINEERING FOR WOMEN

Preparation is vital to a successful interview. Learning as much as you can about the company who are recruiting as well as the person you’ll be meeting are just the basics.&nbsp;Any candidate should have a thorough understanding of the job specification and description at hand and be prepared with at least three questions to ask at the end of the interview. This shows the employer that you are genuinely interested in making this your next career move.Unless you prepare some questions in advance, chances are that&nbsp;your mind will go blank and you’ll run the risk of missing a key piece of information that could impact on whether or not you should accept a job offer if one is made.Here’s our suggestions for the Top 5 Questions you should be considering:How did the vacancy arise?The circumstances of how the opening became available is vitally important, not only to your understanding of the company but the person you could be working for. If the role has become a revolving door you need to ask why?Equally if someone is leaving the business, try to find out the reason and how long they were in the business for. The overall attrition rate of the company will give you an indication of employee satisfaction.If the job is new find out why the role was created and where it fits in to the long term plans of the business. You want to make sure the job will still exist in 12 months’ time.What's the 5 year road-map?What are the company’s medium to long term plans? The length and quality of the answer will give you an idea of the clarity of the plan, its robustness and how well it's understood by the person sat opposite you. It's important to ask as it could well be your road-map in a few weeks time.You also need to understand where you will fit in to that plan. The obvious follow up to this is how they plan to develop you to meet the challenges and opportunities you’ll be encountering.How is performance measured?A clear idea of how your performance will be measured should be a key part of your decision making process. A good salary and monthly bonuses are enough to turn anyone’s head but if the targets are all but near impossible to hit then it’s meaningless.You have to be happy with their expectations, their workload and their work ethic. Get examples of the KPIs, the measures they’re score against and how frequently these and your performance are reviewed.Confirm,­ in writing if possible,­ that there is a structured induction period and training. This is not only reassuring from a personal stand point but demonstrates the company’s commitment to developing and supporting their staff.What is office life like?It’s not only beneficial to find out how many people you will be directly (and indirectly) working with during the average day but try to get a grasp of what the working environment is like as well. The dynamic in the office needs to work for you. Are you a corporate type or a creative? How does that marry up with the interviewer’s description of the office? Are there social events? Do people go to lunch together or does everyone eat at their desks?Essentially this is a good opportunity for you and your interviewer to assess whether or not you’ll be a good fit. All the experience and skills in the world won’t help you if you clash with your colleagues.How well did I do?Don’t be afraid to ask how well the interview has gone. This will give you a good indicator of&nbsp;whether you are a potential candidate or if it didn’t go too well you’ll have a heads up so neither yours or the employer’s time is wasted any further. One thing we always suggest is thanking the hiring manager for their time in seeing you regardless of how well you did, manners count for nothing and this might persuade them to rethink!

RE-ARRANGE SEATING IN THE WORKPLACE AND INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY

Writing a CV or resume can seem a somewhat daunting task especially if you have just come out of education or you have been in a role for more than five years. Formatting a CV to show yourself in the best possible light for a particular job role can be a challenge and it’s easy to get it wrong if you do not take any advice on board. The golden rule of writing a CV is keeping it succinct. It’s so tempting to delve into the particulars of your current role or the coursework you’ve just completed but a potential employer is only interested in a candidate’s abilities and whether they can carry out the job role at hand. Equally if you lack experience in a key area don’t be tempted to pad your CV with skills that you don’t actually have as this will become apparent at interview stage. Should you need extra experience why not volunteer your time to businesses to help get your foot in the door? This tends to show ambition and willing even if it is for a short period of unpaid time. No matter what role you’re applying for, in whatever industry there are key elements that every CV should include. Resist the urge to add design flourishes to your CV such as elaborate borders, hard to read fonts or lots of different colours. Whilst you want your CV to stand out above others it should only do so because it is simple to read and the pertinent information is neatly laid out. The CV structure we have outlined below is based on what we have found to be most successful for our candidates. You can also download our template for a quick solution but we would always suggest you take time and effort preparing your CV as this is the first impression for any hiring client. Profile This should be a short summary of your skills, experience and general persona. This opening paragraph should be contained within four to six lines of text only. Include the top line attributes that will be of interest to your next employer, this should be adapted dependent on the specification of the job vacancy. Achievements Bullet point approximately five key achievements which you feel really showcase your abilities and where your skill set was put to good use. Start with the most relevant points that match the job specification and include any others that might highlight your diversity or work ethic. Work Experience This should always be in reverse chronological order starting with your most recent job. No&nbsp;employer needs to know what Saturday job you did back when you were 16 years old!&nbsp;You only need to include the year you started and the year you finished each job role. You do not need to include the month or day, e.g. put '1998 - 2005' rather than '1.7.1998 - 1.1.2005'.&nbsp; If you have had various jobs early on in your career you might want to think about grouping some of these together, e.g. '1970 - 1980' junior engineering positions. If your job title does not reflect what you actually did, or it sounds a bit obscure, consider changing it. When you are describing your experience for each position you should start with the most relevant aspects to the job role you are applying for. If you have a lot of points to put under one specific job you may want to break this description into two or more sections. You could break up this section into responsibilities and achievements or you could break it up into specific functions, e.g. management, technical skills; the choice is yours. If you have had a number of positions within one company you may not want to include the responsibilities for every individual job role. Simply include the start and year you finished for this employer along with a list of the roles you fulfilled.&nbsp; If the job you are applying for is completely unrelated to your experience you may be better off using a Functional or Targeted CV format. Education/Qualifications/Memberships/Training Only list the most important qualifications and the most relevant memberships you have achieved. If you are a postgraduate you do not really need to list your A Levels/GCSEs, just indicate the number of grades you have achieved. In light of candidates who have recently completed a degree or training and as yet have minimal work experience, it might be with putting this section before work history. You could even mention your recent qualifications in your profile or cover letter so the hiring client is aware of your status. Personal Details The only personal details that should ever be included in a CV are your email address, contact telephone number and whether you hold a clean, valid driving licence. Omit your date of birth, address or marital status as these are unnecessary and should be irrelevant to any role you are applying for. Interests This section should be kept fairly short but it is important nonetheless. This is your opportunity to give your potential future employer an idea of what you like to do in your spare time and ultimately give them an overview of your personality. This will help to decide whether you will fit in with the company culture.
