Weapon System Equipment Project Engineer – Laser Source

Are you an experienced engineer looking to work at the forefront of advanced defence technology?

We are supporting a leading defence organisation developing a next-generation directed energy weapon system and are looking for a Weapon System Equipment Project Engineer to take responsibility for the delivery and integration of a critical laser source subsystem.

This is an opportunity to work on a genuinely pioneering programme where advanced technologies are being developed, integrated and progressed towards a deployable capability.

The role
Working as part of the wider Effector Systems team, you will work closely with external technology partners to manage the delivery of a key laser subsystem.
You will have responsibility for the acceptance and delivery of the equipment through final assembly, integration and test, working across both technical and project interfaces.
The role will involve:
  • Managing technical and programme interfaces with external suppliers and partners
  • Supporting the acceptance and delivery of a complex laser source subsystem
  • Supporting final assembly, integration and test activities
  • Supporting the functional integration of the laser source within the wider weapon system
  • Developing and progressing technical work packages
  • Identifying, managing and mitigating technical and delivery risks
  • Working closely with stakeholders across engineering, project management and external partners
  • Contributing to the continued development and evolution of the wider weapon system

What we're looking for
We are looking for an engineer who can demonstrate experience of working across complex engineering programmes and who is comfortable operating at the interface between technical delivery and project management.
You should ideally have experience in:
  • Working with third-party suppliers or external engineering partners
  • Developing technical Statements of Work and defining technical deliverables
  • Managing technical interfaces and building effective stakeholder relationships
  • Leading technical work packages and tracking delivery against agreed objectives
  • Identifying and balancing technical, programme and delivery risks
  • Supporting the delivery, integration and test of complex engineering equipment or subsystems
Experience of electro-optical, mechanical or complex equipment systems would be advantageous.
You do not necessarily need direct experience of directed energy systems. Experience of delivering complex technology, equipment or subsystems within a highly regulated or technically demanding environment will be highly relevant.

Key information
  • Salary: Up to £53,000 depending on experience
  • Location: Bristol
  • Working pattern: Hybrid, typically 2–3 days per week on site
  • Clearance: British Citizen or Dual UK national with British citizenship

Nationality and security requirements apply to this position. Successful candidates will be required to undergo the appropriate UK government personnel security checks.

Why consider this opportunity?
This role offers the chance to move beyond conventional engineering delivery and contribute to a highly innovative defence technology programme.
You will work with advanced equipment, external technology partners and multidisciplinary engineering teams while playing a key role in taking a complex subsystem through acceptance, integration and test.

For an engineer who enjoys technical ownership, supplier interaction, systems integration and working on challenging engineering programmes, this could be an excellent next step.

Benefits
The organisation offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
  • Company bonus
  • Employer and employee pension contributions of up to 14% combined
  • Paid overtime opportunities
  • Up to 15 additional days of flexible leave
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Enhanced parental leave
  • Subsidised meals and on-site facilities
  • Free car parking
  • Healthcare Cash Plan
