Software Engineer
You will take ownership of early stage prototyping and research and development tools to build immersive simulation technologies that support vital defence training operations. This position allows you to transition technical concepts into working software packages and expand your technical capability across an advanced digital ecosystem. You can shape the future of simulation applications whilst gaining exposure to innovative software architectures and artificial intelligence integrations.

Who we are looking for

• Sole British nationality is required for this position due to security requirements
• A degree in software engineering, computer science, games technology, simulation, or a related technical discipline
• Practical software development experience in Python, C or C#
• A clear understanding of application programming interfaces, data formats, and basic system integration concepts
• The ability to write clear technical documentation such as setup guides and implementation notes

What you will be doing

• Developing and maintaining prototypes, proof of concept systems, and technical software demonstrators
• Implementing integrations between artificial intelligence services, backend systems, and simulation environments
• Supporting applied artificial intelligence development including large language models and local model testing
• Creating microservices, wrappers, and connectors to support cross functional solution components
• Testing and validating software components against acceptance criteria whilst recording limitations clearly
• Preparing technical handoff packages including setup guides and configuration documentation for delivery teams

What you bring

• The capability to build, test, and debug software and small services independently
• A strong problem solving ability and the willingness to learn within a fast paced research environment
• Excellent communication skills to flag technical issues and blockers constructively to senior engineers
• Curiosity and adaptability to work across a varied technical stack and develop new skills over time
• Familiarity with Docker, FastAPI, Unreal Engine, or Unity is advantageous but not essential

Location and setup
This role is based in Portsmouth and operates on a hybrid working pattern, offering a balance between collaborative onsite project work and remote flexibility.
