Coastal State Service Lead

You will take the lead on a high-profile research project to define the future of UK coastal state services, bridging technical gaps in novel maritime technologies to shape international regulatory policy. This 12-month mission offers the autonomy to influence legacy system replacement and establish the strategic vision for national maritime safety.

The essentials
  • Master Mariner Unlimited Certificate of Competency.
  • Extensive senior level command or navigation experience.
  • Proven track record in maritime technical research or policy delivery.
  • Existing right to work in the UK.
Your role
  • Lead a 12-month research initiative to define the future vision for coastal state services and maritime safety.
  • Identify and bridge technical knowledge gaps regarding novel maritime technologies to inform the UK regulatory position.
  • Consult with Lighthouse Authorities and international stakeholders to ensure alignment with global standards.
  • Evaluate the transition from legacy systems to modern navigation and positioning infrastructure.
  • Produce high-level technical reports and recommendations for senior government and regulatory bodies.
Your profile
  • Comprehensive understanding of international maritime regulations and forums such as the IMO.
  • Experience engaging with national Lighthouse Authorities or equivalent maritime stakeholders.
  • Technical knowledge of Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services.
  • Ability to translate complex maritime data into clear strategic policy recommendations.
  • Background in government or public sector maritime environments is highly desirable.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to meet strict 12-month delivery milestones.

Location and setup

This role is based in Southampton and operates on a hybrid working pattern, requiring a blend of onsite presence and remote flexibility.
